TOLEDO PLAZA, CHRISTMAS 2005

After travelling through the sparsely lit darkness of Cebu's hinterland, suddenly one comes across a magical garden with a cacophony of light, almost overpowering the senses.
The ancient, giant tree outside the Police Station, right across the plaza, is elegantly illuminated in the Christmas colors of green and red, providing the impression of a shower of gentle light.
A brief shower drenched the plaza, sending everyone scurrying for cover. Afterwards, the magical atmosphere was only enhanced by the mirrors which had sprung up around the plaza.
A lot of light requires a lot of electricity; the Mirant power station in Toledo is where all the juice comes from. Not surprisingly, Mirant are one of the sponsors, with this merry display.
This pink christmas tree comprised of electrical lights emitted a warm glow, drenching everyone in the vicinity in a soft aura.
Upon closer inspection, the pink tree was found to have been constructed of carefully crafted chains of used wrappers from locally made snacks. The metallic sheen from the wrappers dissipated the pink light. So that's how it works!
So what does one do at the plaza? For the youthful, the main activity seems to be to relax, absorb the ambience, enjoy the music, and check out equally youthful members of the opposite gender while perched on benches and curbs.
As these young girls stroll through the forest of Christmas lights, they must be conscious of the dozens of admiring eyes scrutinizing them intensely as they approach and pass by - again and again.
The only belen (nativity scene) at the plaza occupied a prominent location near the main entrance to the park, as if to remind young revellers of the real significance of Christmas.
A young couple enjoy the romance in the air. Could it be that they it is here where they met and fell in love, hypnotized by the magical atmosphere?
This website would like to congratulate Toledo City Vice Mayor Rudy Espinosa and his daughter Mayor Zambo on yet another successful and fantastical display. More power!
