Danao City is a smallish city about half an hour to the north of Cebu. It is the archetypical
provincial city; neat, leafy, and populated mostly by trisikads (pedicabs). The main industry used to be sugar mills; somewhat surprising, since the island of Cebu (unlike the neighboring island of Negros) isn't suited for sugar production anyway.
Nowadays industry is comprised of one company, but what a company it is: Mitsumi is a Japanese electronics manufacturer, the largest exporter in the Visayas, and singly responsible for a good chunk of the island's budget. Mitsumi is located right along the north-south highway, and although everything is eerily quiet during shifts, scores of vendors and tricycle drivers swarm around the gates when shifts change and the blue-uniformed female workers stream out.
The only other industry worth mentioning is the manufacture of home-made guns, called paltik. These are illegal, and the gunsmiths are arrested every now and then; a recent
story in a newspaper spoke of one gunsmith who had been arrested eight times. The guns are often replicas of US models, and some of them look fantastic despite costing just a fistful of dollars.
Danao City is Durano country. The Durano clan, founded by Ramon Durano, has controlled the city for as long as it has been a city, and long before then, too. "Ace" Durano is the cabinet minister for tourism; the congressional seat he vacated to fill this post was recently contested by two other Duranos.
The Duranos, it has been said, got along really well with President Marcos, and that helped the city prosper during the era of Martial Law. A taxi driver once told me that Danao was exempt from taxes during the Marcos years; I haven't been able to verify this but it sounds plausible enough.
Tourism-wise, Danao is home to the Club Filipino de Cebu Golf Course. It's not a bad course, about as exclusive and expensive as they come, perhaps thanks to some of the pretty shady characters associated with this course.
