KOREAN RESTAURANTS

The number of Korean restaurants in Cebu has been surging, as the Koreans have discovered Cebu in a big way. They're practically taking over the island. It's a sign of the times that there are at least four properties which previously housed Japanese restaurants but now are home to a Korean establishment. It seems that there's a new one every week.

One of the older ones, Godonri, is right on the airport road. I've heard whispered rumors that the owner is a gangster back in Korea; be as that may, the food is great. You may be upset by the second-hand smoke, but better not complain too vociferously or you may end up at the bottom of the Mactan Channel.

Perhaps you haven't had the opportunity to sample authentic Korean cooking. The Korean food in Cebu is authentic and inexpensive, so you really should take this opportunity to try it out. Korean dining often involves broiling beef or pork at your table. After you order, you will be served lots of little dishes, courtesy of the house. Most of these are extremely hot.

The Noodles House, right under the Oxygen billboard near Ayala, is perhaps the only Korean restaurant in Cebu that does not specialize in Korean-style barbecue. Cold noodles - piquant and economical - can be refreshing on a hot day.

My absolute favorite is Hanggang, located next to the Shell gas station in Pusok, Lapu-Lapu, a few hundred yards from Godonri. The mom and pop team of Mr and Mrs Park carefully nurtured their establishment from zero, and the love shows in the food and service. Mrs Park still most of the cooking herself. As is usually the case in a Korean restaurant, the menu is focused on broiled meat, but vegetarians will love the bibimbap - rice topped with egg and sliced vegetables. Be sure to mash everything around with your spoon as soon as it is served.

Wa'y Blima! hasn't yet had a chance to review Arirang, conveniently located at Foodland, in Banilad. This is another placed that housed to use a Japanese restaurant but now is enjoying success with Korean-style barbecue dishes.
